Chapter 21

At the hospital, Brad slid to a stop near the front entrance. Prada got out and stared at the building, wondering what news she would get inside. She and her father never had a close relationship because he worked so much, but he was her family and she loved him regardless.

Sometimes she felt sorry for him because of how much he’d missed of her life to provide for his family. Some men chose to be a workaholic to avoid their family, and he probably did to some degree to avoid his wife, but she knew in his case it was a necessity.

Their lifestyle in Milan was an expensive one. Prada would’ve gladly given up some of the luxuries, though, to have him around more, but knew her mother would not.

Dio, please let him be okay.

The only information she’d received had been a demand from her mother to come home and help her deal with him, because she had to return to Milan for her social obligations. That had been via text message, and she hadn’t returned Prada’s calls.

“I’ll make your go-see appointments while we drive, and email them to you,” Guilia said, jerking Prada from her thoughts. She hugged Prada close and whispered in her ear. “Take someone with you when you go to the one with Freido. Or skip it. I don’t like him or his hands. His designs are ugly, anyway.”

Prada was glad she was speaking in Italian, because she hadn’t broken the news to Dante yet that she would be on a mission of her own to re-establish her career once she reached Milan.

“Thank you, cara. Ti amo, and…be careful,” Prada said, with emotion choking her. She had no idea what she would do without her friend.

“Ti amo too, and don’t worry. I will have Dio Himself with me,” she replied with a laugh and a sideways glance at Brad who was holding open her door, but Prada heard the fear in her friend’s voice. She leaned in to give her air kisses on both cheeks, then another tight hug.

Why did she not want to let her go? Because like Dante, you have a feeling this might be the last time you see her. Dio, please don’t let that be true. Prada finally forced herself to release her, then wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and blew out a breath. She looked at Brad, who leaned on the doorframe looking impatient.

“Take care of her or I will kill you,” Prada warned, pointing a finger at him.

“She’s as safe as she will ever be. You should be afraid for me,” he replied with a cocky grin. “That tongue of hers may slice me to shreds before we get back, if it doesn’t get us killed.”

“Che Palles!” Guilia growled as she got into the seat and yanked the door closed.

“Call me if you get into trouble,” Dante told Brad with a pat on his back. “It’s twelve hours away, but we’ll do our best to get there.
